Deities of Dhanteras

One should always remember that although the festival is celebrated by buying precious metals and jewelry, Dhanvantari is the main deity who is worshipped at the festival. She is the goddess of health, rather than wealth. However, Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi are connected with wealth and from ancient times it has become a tradition for people to buy gold and silver on Dhanteras.

The story behind celebrating Dhanteras

According to Indian Astrology, it is said the whole incident happened because of nectar or Amrita. As per Hindu mythology, it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Kuber had emerged from the ocean of milk with a pot of gold while the sea was being churned. Due to this reason, both deities are worshipped on the festival of Dhanteras.

There is an interesting story behind celebrating Dhanteras. A 16-year-old child who is the son of King Hima projected his death by a snake bite on the 4th day of his marriage. The wife of the king is very clever in nature. When the Prince’s wife came to know about the projection, she starts searching for a way to save the life of her husband. As she knows that her husband could die that day, she doesn't allow him to sleep. She had collected lots of her own ornaments and coins of gold and silver and made a collection at the doorway of his bedroom and lit lamps everywhere in the room. In order to keep her husband awake, she starts reciting stories to him.

After sometimes when the god of Death, Yama or Yamraj arrived there in the form of Serpent his eyes start dazzling. The eyes were dazzling because of lightning lamps and ample jewelry. Due to excessive shine, the god of death was unable to enter the room. God also tried to go through by climbing over the heap of coins but he failed.

After several tries, he suddenly listens to the song of the prince’s wife that she is singing for her husband so that he could not sleep. When Yama listens to the song he sat down there for the whole night and in no time sun rises. After sunrise, Yama left the place without taking her husband's life. In this way, she had protected the life of her husband, from then the day began to be celebrated as Dhanteras.
