Significance of Haryali Teej
The festival of Haryali Teej has an important role to play in defining the true nature of the relationship of a married couple. It describes the bond that couples share with one another. This festival is celebrated all over India and especially in Rajasthan. This festival also announces the arrival of the rainy season. Both the married and the unmarried women observe day-long fast and perform Haryali Teej Puja worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Women celebrate Hariyali Teej and Akha Teej by visiting their parent’s home and they return from their parents home to their in-laws on the auspicious day of Hartalika Teej. Women decorate their hands and feet with henna on this day and wear beautiful attires to celebrate this festival. And all this is done at this festival is dedicated to maa Parvati. This festival gives the women a chance to decorate themselves and look beautiful. The idols of maa Parvati are also decorated by the women in the same way as they decorate themselves.

The method of celebration of this festival varies according to the region. For instance, in Maharashtra women wear green saris, green bangles and bindi on this day and gifts decorated coconuts to the other females. Women celebrating this festival receives a lot of gifts from their parents, in-laws and loved ones. There are many stories behind the celebration of this auspicious festival of Haryali Teej. As mentioned in the scriptures, it was on this day when Lord Shiva accepted Goddess Parvati as his wife after 108 births. This festival marks the reunion of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

The festival of Haryali Teej falls at the end of the Hindu month of ‘sawan’ and the beginning of the month of ‘Bharapad’ or ‘Bhado’. This auspicious festival of women falls on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya Tithi or the fortnight of Bhadra month. As per the Hindu calendar, the month of Bhadrapada falls between August- September. This year the Hariyali Teej date and time is 3rd August at “01:37:23”. Taking the complete advantage of the beautiful climate during this festival women enjoy this festival by swinging, singing and dancing in the rain.

The third day of the Shukla Paksha of the Shravan month is known as Hariyali Teej or Shravani Teej.

This is a two-day festival and women observe day-long Nirjala fast on this occasion and worship Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva to seek their blessings. They offer flowers, sweets, and ornaments to Maa Parvati on this day and pray for their marital bliss. All the women gather together and celebrate this festival by singing, dancing, playing on swings and sharing sweets and gifts with each other. Women prepare dishes like ghevar, dal baati churma, besan laddu, Kaju katli, and many more tasty dishes on this auspicious day of Haryali Teej.
Haryali Teej Fast(Vrat)
Fast is the most important and integral part of this festival of Haryali Teej. Women are supposed to observe Nirjala Vrat (fast) which means they abstain from eating and drinking. Women should visit temples and offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They should offer bilva leaves, incense sticks, and lamps to god. Women should chant bhajans and recite mantra throughout the entire day in order to please God.
